The Canaries, a Spanish archipelago off the northwest coast of Africa, are rugged volcanic islands known for their black sand and white sand beaches. Tenerife, the largest island, is dominated by the peak of Teide, a still active and sometimes snow-capped volcano, which has its own astronomical observatory and belongs to the Teide National Park. It is in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the capital, that a great carnival takes place which precedes Lent.
