French-speaking capital of the Swiss canton of Neuchâtel, the city of Neuchâtel is located on the north shore of the lake of the same name. Its medieval old town extends from the castle of Neuchâtel, dating from the 12th century. Nearby, the Collegiate Church is a Gothic church built during the same period. In the Jura massif, to the west of the city, the Creux du Van is a canyon similar to an amphitheater, offering hiking trails and panoramic views.
